In 1969 I experienced the first of what led to a long series over the past 40 years or so of vertigo episodes. At first they came about every 18 months. The frequency has increased over the years, the severity of which has always varied. The length of an episode varied from 30 minutes to 12 hours and the recuperation from a couple hours to half a day or so.
At first there were no lingering symptoms but over time pressure in either or both ears remained, along with tinnitus, which included both ringing (sometimes in two pitches) and roaring, the volume of which varied based on the amount of pressure in the ear(s). The next phase brought increasingly bad general well-being, thus hampering my ability to function at work. I have lived with poor hearing, feeling lousy most of the time, lack of energy, noise in the ears and disequilibrium between bouts of vertigo. I would often feel like I was about to fall over but did not. I was gradually losing general stability. It was becoming harder and harder to do my job well and I was feeling like life was getting more and more laborious. I even considered going on disability. |
